Touch down

14th January 2015 | Posted in Latest News

Hiya,

Here I am! I’ll not be adding any photos today as I am in an internet cafe…. however, I’ll be as descriptive as I can!!

My journey here was pretty uneventful to be honest…. long and boring. I arrived at the airport shortly after 4 am but it takes a while to get through the security checks, so didnt get to the bus stop until 6am ish I guess. It was a bit of a palaver getting a ticket for the pelican and my bags loaded on the bus, but I managed it. Abs (Abduli Dumboya) was a happy sight for a weary traveller after the short boat crossing from the airport. His house is minutes from the pelican drop off point, so I was soon comfortable there. He and his family have made me very welcome seeing as his wife has just had a new baby boy!

After a few hours of trying to get to sleep I got up and sat on his sun deck overlooking the hillside down towards Aberdeen Creek. There are lots of wonderful things to see….. and some not so wonderful to be honest! However, there is wildlife and nature in abundance. Just in his small outdoor area there were Lime, Palm, Banana and mango trees. Multitudes of birds…. 6-7 varieties just in the small lime tree. The chickens and lizards run amock on the ground and there also lots of beautiful butterflies too.

The weather is steamy and hazy but very warm, but not as overpowering as I was expecting however. The people so far have all been friendly and “politely” interested in the “Bogger from London”!! There is a lot going on consistantly and the people seem industrious and busy. The houses vary from decent quality houses to the shacks depicted in the “Man in a Shack” pictures. The slums are awful, and thats from a distance! I watched some men doing various building work and they we not unskilled…. I think access to tools are limited though as I only saw hammers and trowels used!
