The Foundation Stone

Early start as we head to the building site. Greeted by 45 workers doing their pre work press-ups and exercises. Great atmosphere as I had the opportunity to share some thoughts with them and thank them for their contribution.

I found it truly moving to see the first 8 houses fully laid out, thousands of bricks and blocks, cess pits sealed and the place was buzzing. Joe and I worked on the layout of the business park as we envisaged buildings that will be the future of many livelihoods. I learned of the desperation of some of the workers to get jobs. Of those who insisted on volunteering until we would hire them and those who came back day after day and now passionately work so hard.

Then a moment of significance as they invited me to lay the first block of the fist house. Laying the cornerstone is not just symbolic but reminds me of the cornerstone of my faith and who makes all this possible.

A ride back across the beautiful peninsula road and to meetings as we wrestled with rentals and how the project works for the slum dwellers to get their own homes. This is difficult as we reconcile the costs with what can be afforded and the what ifs e.g. someone how early death affects ownership.

For me it’s a day I will never forget – to see the incredible progress on site with thoughts of the thanks to so many who have chosen to help make this possible.
