Life in Sierra Leone

Dear family and friends,

Here we are on the way to our first month settling here in The amazing Sierra Leone. This week has been a lively one. With Lots more bricks, Getting stuck on the road to a local mine and had to be dug out in our lorry, Our security man was in a bike accident and had to be taken to the hospital (no breakages). We were sitting there waiting to be seen when the ambulance pulled up and pulled out a person right in front of us and identified that the poor lady was dead on arrival then had a chat about what to do for 15 mins. That was a bit strange as we thought they were going to start treating her at first. This particular hospital is the best one around and was full last night, they said that they have to turn ambulances away, can you imagine it??

We are well and enjoying it all and have had a great opportunity given by a friend of ours to take blind and disabled people out for dinner, we will normally arrange it with one of the Outside ad hock Kitchens that serve up street food.

Tonight we had the first dinner with some dear people with polio, some could walk with crutches others were in wheel chairs (both with punctures or no tyres at all) We ate Cassava leaves with Chicken and sat under this huge tree with vines hanging down, like the ones Tarzan would swing from. Danger was these little black ants, tiny little gits, both Sarah and I stepped in the wrong place and got bitten at different times tonight and proceeded to do the ant dance. All wearing off now though so no major harm.

To finish we read the story of Lazarus and the rich man and had a chat about it. Tonight’s bill including food for 12 plus drinks 80 000 Leones, or a tenner. What a Brucie bonus.

Friday night we have a community meal for 70 people from a slum that was bulldozed recently to ‘clear the place up’. 350 plus people lost what little they had, the 70 remain sleeping in a huge room and a school. This is What Home Leone is about: We want to give the people an opportunity for a fresh start and a new home to those who have NOTHING.

If you need a vehicle to deliver something to the poor, take a look at the website and see if HomeLeone can help you to do it.
Have a great week everybody. Enjoy every moment possible.
All our love
